  • 5 Absolutely Fanstatic Food !!! :-)

I love it, my wife love's it and my kids can't get enough of it ! Fast friendly service, and the quality of food is absolutely fantastic, I'm not sure how they do it for the price, as most of the dishes are under a fiver - AND THEY FILL YOU UP TOO :-).A Tip : You can always tell when an oriental restaurant is good quality, when lots of the customers are oriental themselves, and this is certainly the case here :-)Many great restaurants have fallen victim to the recent recession. At less than £5 per main dish, I don't think that will happen to Pompoko, thank god ;-).I very much suspect that Zilr's recent bad review on the trusted places website is from a rival restaurant (not the first), or someone who is being wound up by their mates. If there was ever a case of food poisoning they would have investigated or shut the place down mate. Your talking tosh Zilr ! Simon (Skyhopper)

  • 1 Food poisoning!!!

I'd eaten here before and thought it was nice and very reasonable. However, after eating there the other night I suffered a seriously violent dose of food poisoning. When the vomiting began I was with some friends who asked where I had eaten. I told them it was Pompoko and they all reacted with loud "OOOOOOH"s and their own stories of food poisoning they had experienced or one's their friends had experienced. In total 5 people I know have personally experienced problems from this place. I'm sure they're nice people who are blissfully unaware of what they're doing but they're doing it nonetheless.I wouldn't wish food poisoning on anyone. DO NOT EAT FOOD FROM HERE. THEY POISON PEOPLE REGULARLY!

  • 5 Great food, great price

I've been to Pompoko many times now. It is in a great part of town and serves great food for the price. It is not like all these japanese themed restaurant chains, the food is un-pretentious, always comes quickly and is delicious. The staff always look after you and the place has a really nice vibe.It is not haute cuisine but if your after quick tasy food at a good price then its just the place.

  • 5 Yum!

This is the best and most authentic Japanese restaurant in Brighton. There's no sushi here - it's real Japanese food that real Japanese people eat. It's also real Japanese cafe prices - nice and cheap for great food! You can speak Japanese if you want, something you can't do in Oki Nami or Moshi Moshi. They're open late, and you can bring your own alcohol. We enjoy the miso, gyoza (dumplings), and kim chi. Try this place, you'll love it!

  • 5 Cheap and so damn cheerful

I love this little place, I always seem to end up taking people here, especially as a student because the prices are unbeatable! Try the Ebi Chilli Don its my favourite and only £4.20 you cant go wrong and I usually cant finish its so filling! The tempura prawns side are good but tried the breadcrumbed ones the other day and id say theyre even better. Also love the bring your own policy, they charge a quid for a glass. Advice wise, if your going in and theres no seats downstairs, run upstairs and get some before ordering or someone will almost definately skip in behind you!

  • 4 A Japanese Brighton Bargain!

After a wild night out watching the Mighty Boosh in Brighton, the bf and I needed sustenance before our drive home. And we definitely found it at small-but-perfectly-formed Japanese restaurant Pompoko.Pompoko is very cheap, very cheerful and very popular judging by the amount of people eating at 10.30pm. It's the perfect place for a quick late night bite to eat and also does takeaway. We squeezed ourselves into the last two seats in the 20 seat downstairs area and ordered our meals from the counter. The Ebi Fried prawns were crisp and delicate in their breadcrumbed coatings, and the Gyoza dumplings were light and fragrant with a deliciously soy-soaked chicken and vege filling.Moving on to main courses, we were served with generous rice bowls topped with chicken in a sweet and sour sauce (Chicken Nanban Don) and beef strips in honey, ginger and soy (Beef Shouga Yaki Don). Neither of us could finish our rice, and we left pretty stuffed. At only £13 for two starters, two mains and two soft drinks, there's no need to flash the plastic at Pompoko. In fact you couldn't if you wanted to, as it's cash only. They're also unlicensed, so if you need some sake to wash down your donburi, just bring your booze with and stump up the very reasonable £1 glass charge.

  • 5 Very tasty

I love this place. Bit small, but the food and service more than make up for it. Delicious!

  • 4 Cute and delicious!

Pompoko is a small and crowded authentic Japanese canteen. Photos and descriptions of the dishes are spread on the wall in a rather haphazard but sort of sweet fashion (we found them pretty helpful actually). We weren't sure what to expect as the prices were so cheap (change from a fiver for a main course!!!) but I'm happy to say that both myself and my company were very happy. The teriaki skewers were very tasty as was the sesame chicken with rice, but it could have done with more sauce as I ended up with a lot of plain rice and nothing to go with it. If you're expecting a romantic meal, be prepared to be sandwiched between lots of noisy students (but then what do you expect with somewhere so cheap and 5mins away from Grand Parade campus). The Japanese girls working there were also very sweet and funny especially when some fizzy drink thing exploded behind the bar with a bang halfway through our meal and they had to be rescued by the chef....! Go here for casual dining if you want something tasty, authentic and quick. Also go here if you are a student on a budget and have run out of Wagamama's 2-4-1 vouchers!

  • 5 pompoko

we love love love Pompoko - its a perfect place to stop by and fill up on cheap Japanese noodles and rice, with excellent gyoza and edemame too - it really filled a gap in the food market in Brighton with its relaxed style and quick japanese foodits a bring your own venue with tesco's just round the corner, so not far to go before you can come back with a bottle of something to go with your mealits not somewhere to sit all night, its got a higher turnover of tables, but its a perfect place for a quick meal to start a night out or to drop in to at lunchtime
